Welcome back everyone to a very unusual Term 2! I would firstly like to thank everyone in the community for their efforts in working together to make our state safe. By adhering to the messages from the government we’re certainly tracking in the right direction. It is important that we continue to follow the advice of our premier in this regard.
School has started back and I was pleased to see how many students have picked up their learning packs and are engaging with the work both online and offline. We have had some teething problems with accessing our online learning but on the whole the system seems to be working. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the teachers and teacher assistants for their hard work in getting the learning packs and online content prepared. There has been a tremendous amount of time and effort put into preparing that work. I’d also like to thank Mrs Bumford in the office- she has been amazing in her ability to troubleshoot over the phone and help our many callers struggling with the technology.
Please remember that we are not asking you as parents to become teachers overnight. Our aim is to give your children stimulating and educative tasks that they can do at home independently or with your support. We are not asking you to teach concepts or sequence learning, but to help them focus and do the best they can. Our teachers will be regularly catching up with you and your children over the phone, by email or other online platforms throughout the term. As we continue to learn and develop our processes and work with you I am sure that together we will be able to continue to support your child’s development and learning during this difficult time.
We will also be providing videos and online tutorials via Facebook, the newsletter and our website. Please keep an eye out for them as they will help keep us all connected and informed.

This message is just a reminder to parents about the Department’s School Levy Refund Process. If you have not already completed this process, a simple online form and related instructions have been made available here: https://levyrebate.education.tas.gov.au.
The online form can be completed up until Friday 1 May 2020 on a computer, laptop, tablet or mobile device with internet capabilities. Safety and security steps have been built into this process to ensure complete confidentiality for parents/carers.
Once validation has occurred and the online form has been completed and submitted, the reimbursement of funds will occur within five business days.
The Department of Education will offer an alternative arrangement where this online option may not be possible. For more information please visit: https://www.education.tas.gov.au/parents-carers/novel-coronavirus-covid-19.
For any enquiries regarding your refund, please contact 1800 827 055 or email stas@education.tas.gov.au.
The Premier’s Reading Challenge (PRC) is on again. Things will look a little different for how the competition is run this year. South George Town Primary School would love to register as many students as possible for this highly worthwhile event. If your child is interested in participating then please send the school a text message on 0481 072 579 expressing your interest in the PRC along with your child’s name and grade. Alternatively, contact the school with the same details via Facebook messenger. The Premier’s Reading Challenge is a free event and starts this week and will run until 3rd July. Students are encouraged to read 10 books in these 10 weeks and upon completion will receive certificates. More information can be found at https://premiersreadingchallenge.tas.gov.au
Do you know someone with a child born in 2016? Children born in that year are eligible for pre-Kindergarten! Mrs Spicer would love to hear from any potential enrolments and can be contacted by calling the school on 6382 1564 or texting 0418 479 961.
In Term 2, Book Club will look a little different. Families will still be able to order, we will still be offering a
'pay by cash' option, but there will not be a hard copy catalogue. This term catalogues will be delivered online at:
https://scholastic.com.au/book-club/virtual-catalogue-1/ Using the LOOP online option is the easiest way to order.
We will be in touch when orders arrive at school.
