What a roller coaster of a term this has been! From initially starting with learning from home we quickly reverted to everyone back at school, albeit with many restrictions and rules in place. As the term has progressed some of those restrictions have been gradually removed, and next term we will have less restrictions in place.
Most notably is that adults are once again free to enter the building. For short visits like drop off and pick up, bringing in a forgotten item, delivering a lunch box, etc. , parents may come into the building. For longer stays, such as parent/teacher discussions, assemblies, volunteering in class, watching children play sport in the 5/6 sports roster, parents will need to come via the office and fill in the visitor screening document. Physical distancing rules of 1.5m still apply unless with immediate family in which you reside.
Once again I would like to thank, and congratulate, our parents and community for the amazing support you have been to our students and school over this term. Our children have returned to school focused and settled, with a very positive attitude towards learning. Our students should be widely congratulated for their resilience and willingness to embrace the challenges that the current environment has presented, and their commitment to their learning. The teaching staff, our office staff and school attendants have all been superb in their dedication to support our students and families. Their adaptability to learn new tasks and skills, adapt to day to day changes and persevere in difficult circumstances cannot be underestimated nor down played
I wish you all a restful break, and hope that you can get out and explore our state with the lifting of restrictions. If the weather is unkind, remember to find a good book to read!
Yours in partnership,
Brett Hay
Each month we present two Aussie of the Month awards. Normally, this is done during our assemblies. Unfortunately, with Covid-19 restrictions, this hasn’t been possible so Mr Hay has been presenting the awards via youTube. Aussie of the Month awards aim to recognise and celebrate active citizenship and community contribution in our schools. Congratulations to our June recipients: Willow and Hunter
Congratulations go to these students for completing the Premier’s Reading Challenge.

Participants needed to read a minimum of 10 books over 10 weeks. Because our students are such avid readers they devoured over 150 books between them. A fantastic effort! In recognition of their great work these students will receive prizes this week and a certificate from the Premier of Tasmania, Peter Gutwein, next term. A big thank you to all families who helped encourage and support their children take part in this excellent activity. Even though the Premier’s Reading Challenge has finished at our school we would still encourage all children and families to keep the reading momentum going and take time to regularly enjoy the pleasures of reading. Be it to escape our current reality and briefly enter a new one through a character in a story, or to keep up to date with current events from around the world, or to share a wild adventure with a friend, or to instil the love of reading and build a wider vocabulary by reading to a toddler. Whatever the reason, the benefits of reading, either to oneself or to others, are many. Here are just a few:
- Reading enhances mental stimulation
- Reading can help you escape, unwind and relax.
- Reading increases your knowledge & intelligence – the more you read, the more you know.
- Reading helps you build a rich vocabulary, which improves written and verbal communication skills.
- Reading improves concentration and memory retention. It gives your brain a work out!
- Reading allows your critical thinking skills to develop – which will help you solve problems.
- Reading lets you learn about other people, places and situations – this helps build empathy and makes you a more rounded person.
Our whole school photo day will be held on Thursday 23rd July (first week of Term 3). It would be great to get as many returned by the end of this term (3rd July) to ensure smooth running on the day. If you require a family photo envelope you will need to collect one from the school office.
This Thursday we will be holding a plain clothes day in support of 3/4 Garwood student Will Stephens and his Mum Prue. On Saturday they shaved their heads to raise money for Breast Cancer Network Australia. This is a cause close to their hearts, as Will's Nan, Jude, was recently diagnosed. This organisation does some amazing work with Tasmanian patients. Students will be asked to bring along a gold coin donation please which we will send to BCNA.
In preparation for the first rostered game for 2020, which is on the 24th July, Winter Sports training will begin this Friday afternoon. All Grade Fives and Sixes are involved, as well as some Grade Fours. Students should bring along suitable sports gear.
Whilst mouth guards are not compulsory for the this first training session for football and hockey, please wear one if you have one. Mouth guards will be compulsory for footy and hockey in Term Three and strongly recommended in soccer.
