The first couple of weeks are always a challenge for children and families (and teachers) to get back into school routines. Ensuring children are getting optimal sleep is very important as this has the greatest impact on their ability to function well at school. Creating good bedtime routines (with at least half an hour of no screen time before bed) is one way to help your child. Reading with your child is also a great way for you to share some time and unwind ready for sleep.
Reading will again be a focus across our school this year. Class teachers, support teachers and teacher assistants are all working in reading groups to help improve our students reading. If you are unsure how to assist your child in developing their reading all of our teaching staff are ready and willing to help you out. We will also be running sessions for parents throughout the year to assist you in helping develop your child’s reading skills.
We have certainly hit the ground running in terms of our focus on learning. All classes are already into their numeracy and literacy routines and targeted support groups are underway. It is such a joy to walk around the school and see our students already so engaged in their learning. I have started my reading groups and I am so pleased with the enthusiasm they have brought to our sessions. All the teachers have commented on the positive start we have had and the willingness of our students to “have a go”. Our challenge is to keep that momentum rolling and build on this positivity throughout the year.
Yours in partnership,
Brett Hay

At South we have a Positive Behaviour Support focus each week. This is based on our values of learning, respect, responsibility and relationships and is taken from our behaviour expectations matrix. To begin the year, we will discuss each value in detail and what it means to us and our school community. The PBS focus is published each week in the newsletter and on facebook and can be seen on display around the school. We encourage parents to discuss the focus with their children each week.
On Monday 24th February, students from Grade 3 – 5 (and selected Grade 6 students) will commence their Swimming and Water Safety Program. This program will run for two weeks and students will bring home information over the coming days. Consent has been provided through the coloured form signed during book sales. If you have not completed this form, one will be sent home with your child. Students without a completed form will be unable to participate.
Students from 1/2 Locke and 1/2 Gilmartin-Garwood will also participate in the swimming program. Details will be sent home with students in those classes. They will also require a signed consent form.
South George Town Primary School has a Sun Smart Policy that has been endorsed by the School Association. The purpose of this policy is to protect the wellbeing of our students through good Sun Smart practices and to develop safe behaviours in our children.
The policy includes the wearing of wide-brimmed hats during Terms 1 and 4. Caps, beanies and other items are not suitable. Students who do not have hats will need to stay in the shade during recess and lunch breaks.
All students arriving after 8.55am must be signed in at the main office by a parent/carer. Also, all students who are leaving school before 3.00pm need to be signed out. This is a part of our Duty of Care for your child. In the event of a fire alarm or emergency situation, it is imperative that our daily record of attendance is accurate.
Turning Circle
A friendly reminder that the turning circle at the front of the school is a no parking area. As there are limited spaces in the car park, we are fortunate to have so much parking available to us in Victoria Street and Franklin Street. Students are reminded to use the school crossing.
Changes to George Town Bus Service
To clarify changes in payment for the Buses R Us local George Town service. If you are a low income family, or on a pension or health care card, you can apply to Service Tasmania on their website or via a link on www.busesrus.net.au for a Green Card. If you do not qualify for a Green Card, the cost will be $1.80 per trip payable to the driver. Ten ride tickets can also be purchased for the discounted rate of $14.40.
The cards can take up to 6 weeks to arrive if ordered at this time of the year.
These changes do not impact the Low Head/Bell Buoy, Lefroy/Beechford, Pipers River or Hillwood routes.
Are you eligible for the Student Assistance Scheme (STAS) 2020?
STAS is available to provide assistance to low income families towards the cost of levies for students enrolled from kindergarten through to year 12. An income assessment is applied for assistance under the Scheme.
Eligibility details for STAS 2020 are provided on the STAS application form, which is available from the school office. If you believe you may qualify, please come and see us.
If you are currently receiving Student Assistance and have a child commencing school this year, you will need to add them on to the Approval Letter you should have received recently. That letter should then be brought into the school office.

Have you heard about Launching into Learning?
Launching into Learning is a free program where you and your child can get to know your local school, Child and Family Centre and other families. It is for families with children from birth – 4 years of age and is available in all Tasmanian Government schools and Child and Family Centres. Children learn a lot in the early years of life. Launching into Learning provides opportunities for you to be involved in your child’s learning in a supportive environment, helping you give your child a great start.
