As our Learn to Swim program draws to its conclusion I would like to congratulate all of our participating students on the effort that you have put in. It isn’t easy to come back to school in a new class, learning new routines and then having to walk to and from the pool and do very physically demanding activity every day. It's certainly tiring, but very rewarding and I know many of you have made excellent progress.
Again this year we will have a school wide focus on developing our English/Literacy skills. Learning to read, write, listen and speak are fundamentals of being a successful student and participant in learning and life. We are focusing early in this term on developing our students' vocabulary (word bank). According to some research that Mr Baty spoke to the staff about at professional learning on Tuesday afternoon, children learn 10 new words every day! Developing a wide vocabulary is one of the greatest indicators of children’s ability to learn to read and write. It is important that children have wide exposure to new words as often as possible, both at school and at home. Reading a variety of different books to your child, having conversations about new and interesting topics and watching documentaries with words that apply to that specific topic are simple ways that you can support your children’s vocabulary development.
We will continue to work with our parents and community in supporting our children’s learning this year in all areas. Keep an eye out for some very exciting things we are doing at school and in partnership with our community, as well as sharing our learning journey with you all via our social media channels.
Yours in partnership,
Brett Hay
