A warm welcome back to school for term 3 to everyone! I hope you all enjoyed some time to relax and enjoy a break after a very busy term 2. Our start back at school has been exceptional, with students extremely focused on their learning and self improvement.
Our schedule, as ever, is jam packed with exciting learning opportunities and we have already been involved in a successful NAIDOC week celebration and cultural experience provided by our Aboriginal Education Teacher Susan Long and our Aboriginal students. We have had our first week of winter sport and our student leaders participating in a forum with other student leaders in a round table discussion with the Future Impact Group.
Winter sport will continue fortnightly this term, weather permitting, and Country Gold selections occurred today, practice for those teams will begin in earnest before the carnival in week 9. We also look forward to all of our students being involved in learning First Aid, Book Week, and an Esk Band development day at Newstead College for continuing players.
At school we will continue to be working on the development of vocabulary with a school wide focus on mathematics’ vocabulary. Our teachers are meeting weekly to build our understanding and develop best practice teaching within this area. Throughout the year our data is showing that our students overall are improving in the area of vocabulary in line with our explicit teaching within this area. Again, I encourage you to talk to your children about the words they are learning at school, and to also make time to read with your children every day.
Yours in partnership,
Brett Hay

Following on from a direction from the Tasmanian Government, we now have some changed arrangements in place for parents and carers when visiting schools.
You will now need to check in using the Check-in TAS app when entering school property.
Students are NOT required to check-in, these arrangements only apply to adults.
We have posters displayed in and around the school site with the QR code to use for checking in.
For those who do not have a smart phone and need to manually check-in, please come to the school office for assistance.
We appreciate your support in ensuring we are doing the right thing.

Inspirational Speakers: Listen Learn and be Inspired
Inspirational Speakers: Listen Learn and be Inspired
The Grade 5 / 6 classes are going to be involved in a program called, “Listen, Learn and be Inspired.”
People with interesting, inspiring and courageous stories will be invited to share their life’s journeys with students once a fortnight (on every second Wednesday morning, for 45 minutes). Many of our speakers will be former South George Town Primary students.
We believe that inviting motivational speakers in to share their stories with our students will be a great way to inspire and encourage our young people to push themselves out of their comfort zone and teach them the importance of self-belief and a positive attitude.
If anyone in the community has someone in mind who could be involved in the program, please drop in to speak to Darrin Timms or Della White.

Last Wednesday our school participated in a NAIDOC Week celebration. Students practised some palawa kani with Susan before moving around a series of cultural activities. These included Music, stories, shell necklace making and ochre painting. Students also enjoyed sampling damper and a kangaroo sausage. Thank you to our special guests from Bell Bay Aluminium, George Town Council , George Town Child and Family Centre and George Town Library for joining our celebrations. We would also particularly like to acknowledge support from Bell Bay Aluminium who have provided us with funds for our Sense of Place project. This project has several components with the first being the installation of signage using the traditional language of the palawa people. Two of these signs have already been installed at the front of the school. We will also be further developing our Bush Tucker Garden and involving Elders in helping students to build shelters in a new interactive Indigenous garden. We are so excited about this project and thank Bell Bay Aluminium for this support.
Student Leaders Round Table Discussion
In the first week of term three, all six student leaders went to Port Dalrymple School to have a round table discussion about what changes we can do for younger learners. Being there was an amazing experience for all of us. Getting to hear what other leaders want to do was a lot of fun.
Being a student leader means we get to do lots of things like going to Port Dalrymple School. Speaking in assemblies is so much fun seeing people's faces and them laughing at the photos they see on screen. We also get to do carnivals with the preps and everyone of them has a smile on their face.

5/6 Design Structure Challenge
5/6 White and 5/6 Timms took on a design structure challenge in term 2.
Background
In Australia we deal with all sorts of natural disasters. Flood, fire, earthquakes and cyclones are all part of living in Australia. In other countries, a great deal of time, effort and money are spent on ‘disaster proofing’ buildings to survive in the event of the worst-case scenario. Depending on where you live, the buildings are usually designed for a particular natural disaster. In Japan for instance, which has up to 1500 earthquakes of magnitude 6.0 or more per year, all buildings are built with this in mind.
Depending where you live in Australia usually decides which type of disaster you may have to face. Residents of the Hawkesbury Valley in NSW for instance regularly face flooding events and have even developed a turf farm industry which relies on the sediment left after a flood. People living in remote bushland in Tasmania often face extreme fire danger and residents in far North Queensland are often faced with strong winds and cyclones. Whilst earthquakes are rarer in Australia, when they do strike they can cause extensive damage such as the Newcastle earthquake in 1989.
Problem
Armed with the knowledge from our recent work on natural disasters, you are to design a house which can survive a natural disaster. Working in pairs, you will research what design features are traditionally used to protect housing from natural disasters and adapt them to a scale model which will then be tested to check its survivability. You may choose to protect your design from cyclonic winds, fire, flood or earthquake. Since the Earth has limited resources, so too do engineers. You will only be able to use the provided materials and your design must be under budget as explained below. Your building must also meet the design requirements for the disaster zone you have chosen.
Materials and Equipment
Popsticks – These may be cut or adapted to the shape you desire but must otherwise remain unaltered. Each popstick will cost $10 which represents the cost of a real plank of wood.
Plasticine – This is the ‘mortar’ you will use to help hold things together. It will cost $1 per gram.
White PVC glue – This is the only glue which you can use and will be supplied free at the discretion of the supplier (teacher).
Cardboard – This will be supplied in sheets. You must purchase a whole sheet which can then be cut to the desired size. This is an expensive material and will cost $20 per 10cm x 6.5cm sheet.
Disaster Zone Requirements (Define the problem)
Wind – Your design must be able to withstand the effect of an electric house fan at full level. It must be at least 20cm high, 10cm wide and 10cm deep. It must also have a garage connected to the main building. This garage needs to be able to park the supplied car. Your budget for this build is $1500.
Fire - Your design will be tested by exposing it to a sustained heat source with exposed flame. It must be at least 20cm high, 10cm wide and 10cm deep. It must also have a garage connected to the main building. This garage needs to be able to park the supplied car. Your budget for this build is $1500.
Flood - Your design must be able to withstand the effect of 10 litres of floodwater impacting the house. It must be at least 20cm high, 10cm wide and 10cm deep. It must also have a garage connected to the main building. This garage needs to be able to park the supplied car. Your budget for this build is $1500.
Earthquake – Your design is for the inner-city area and as such, will resemble a skyscraper in size. It must be at least 50cm in height and at least 10cm wide and 10cm deep at some point. It will be tested using a ‘shaker table’. Your budget for this build is $1800.
Congratulations to the following winners
