It has been a fantastic few weeks of learning at South! It has been a privilege to be working with the Ainslie residents with our year 1/2 classes. We have enjoyed having them at school and learning about the past and their incredible lives, and we certainly had a great time visiting them at their residence. We thank the Ainslie residents, their staff and Jayne Watts for organising this amazing collaboration.
Our teachers have been working on developing our students' reading comprehension through writing and oral language. This has been a school wide priority and we are using our professional learning teams to build our knowledge and teaching expertise to enhance the student outcomes. We have also shared our processes at the moderation day with staff from Port Dalrymple and Lilydale District School. Building our teaching practice and student achievement in reading comprehension is a throughline that we will have all year.
To continue to support our reading focus we will again have our “Draw, Talk, Write” packs for early childhood students ready for distribution soon. We will provide the packs with supporting information and a short video explaining how to best engage with your child. This has been a hugely popular initiative that we have used over previous years to support our younger students in learning to write and read and to build enthusiasm for the process in class.
We wish our students who are competing in the ALL Schools Cross Country the best of luck. These students are those who came in the top 10 in the TPSSA cross country and are representing the association. We hope that you have a nice day for the competition at Symmons Plains as the course can be quite gruelling, particularly in inclement weather!

As part of our focus on continuous school improvement, we will be involved in an External School Review this year.
The purpose of External School Reviews is to support schools to raise achievement, sustain high performance and provide quality assurance to build public confidence in government schools. All Tasmanian Government Schools will be externally reviewed every four years. The focus of the Review is to evaluate school performance. The Review Team consists of an External School Review Leader and trained Principal Peer Reviewers. The review will occur on Monday 24th June and Tuesday 25th June 2024.
We will find out the effective school practices that have been verified through the Review processes as well as the improvements that we need to make in the future. During the External School Review some students, families, School Association members and staff will be asked to provide information to the Review Team in a number of ways.
These include:
• individual interviews (can include family phone calls)
• group discussions (with students or staff or families)
• meetings (usually School Association, staff meeting)
• visits into classrooms.
We appreciate your support and time in helping us with this External School Review process. If you do not wish for your child to participate please contact the office to complete a withdrawl form.

Bell Bay Aluminium Tree Planting
On Thursday 23rd May our Prep classes were given the opportunity to take part in the Bell Bay Aluminium Tree Planting Day. They had a wonderful time planting and then followed up with a barbeque. Thank you Bell Bay Aluminium for this amazing experience.
National Simultaneous Storytime
On Wednesday 22nd May, Grade 1/2 students went to The Hub for National Simultaneous Storytime. Students listened to Richard Curtis, General Manager of Bell Bay Aluminium read Bowerbird Blues by Aura Parker. They then made their own bird. Each student received a hardback copy of the book to keep which was very generously donated by Bell Bay Aluminium. Thank you to the George Town Library for hosting this event.
The TPSSA Cross Country was held on Tuesday 21st May at Beaconsfield Primary School. It was perfect running conditions with a new course being tried out this year. South George Town students all performed extremely well with some finding they improved quite a bit from previous years.
