Our start to Term 3 has been very settled and both teachers and students have been working hard at our school priority around reading.
We saw at our recent assembly what our reading priority looks like with Prep Grace sharing how they learn the sounds and letter blends in learning to read, and 5/6 Timms demonstrating their researching, reading, writing and speaking skills in their presentation demonstrating reading to learn. We continue to be relentless as a staff in our own professional learning in developing our teaching and the systems and processes supporting reading. As I have mentioned previously, our external school review recognised us as outstanding in this area and we continue to strive to deliver the best literacy programming anywhere in the country.
Our second priority is attendance. We simply can’t help our students learn and be the best versions of themselves if they aren’t at school. Whilst we have made some progress in improving our attendance, it is still a frustration for us that we have students missing days too frequently. We are always willing to work with families to help get students to school- please make contact with us if this is a difficulty and we will work with you to find solutions. We sent out a great video last week on Facebook explaining how avoidance of activities creates ongoing and deeper issues over time, so thus it is very important to create good attendance habits early.
We see South George Town Primary as a place of opportunity and continue to give our students a wide variety of experiences. The Terrapin Puppet performance last week was fantastic and our Esk Band continuing payers also had a wonderful experience practicing with other schools. Our Country Gold participants and Friday sporting groups are also having a great time. We are also participating in Singfest this year for the first time. The development of the whole child is something we are continually focused on and proud of what we offer.
As book week approaches, I would encourage you all to have a think about the purpose of our dress up day- focusing on characters from books and their impact to our love of reading. Whilst a movie or TV character may be the most popular, I would encourage everyone to dig a bit deeper and find the book that they might come from and enjoy reading that at home to inspire our students to read.

Last week students from Prep to Grade 6 had a performance by Terrapin called ‘Feathers’. It was a fabulous performance which both students and staff enjoyed. Thank you for visiting our school!
5/6 White is going to be involved in a program called, “Listen, Learn and be Inspired.”
People with interesting, inspiring and courageous stories will be invited to share their life’s journeys with students on Wednesday afternoons, from 2:15 until 3:00pm. Our first speakers are:
21st August: Erika McKinnon, a previous ‘South’ student who is studying a Bachlor of Nursing
28th August: Jack Hulse, a previous ‘South’ student who is a Boiler Maker/Welder
4th September: Kaytlin Bodis, a local George Town girl who is doing Neonatal Nursing and General Nursing
On Wednesday August 6, thirteen players from our Esk Band, along with Miss Long, attended a band workshop at Newstead College. This was for all players continuing from previous years and beginning grade 6 students. We were joined by students from Glen Dhu, East Launceston and Punchbowl schools, and together formed a band of around 60 students playing flutes, clarinets, bass clarinets, alto saxophones, trumpets, French horns, trombones, euphoniums, tubas and a huge range of percussion.
It was an amazing experience hearing such a great sound as we worked towards the same goal together, rehearsing 4 pieces of music to be performed at Launceston City Park in November, where the newly established Port Dalrymple band will join us as well. It was wonderful to see new friends being made, and others being able to catch up with existing friends, from other schools. We acquired many new skills at the workshop and look forward to sharing our pieces with the school soon!
Last week our grade 5-6 and selected grade 4 students competed in our first round of Winter Sport for 2024. Students braved the cold weather and gave it a go, which was amazing to see. There are many more photos on our school social media pages.
Last week we celebrated NAIDOC Week across the school. Tania, our Aboriginal Education Worker, provided a range of cultural activities for students to try. They made hand prints and bracelets and painted shells. Students also did some printing and collage, hunted for shells and played clapsticks. They enjoyed feeling furs and also tasted some Aboriginal food. Thank you to Tania and her incredible helpers, Zeph, Kiara and Avaya. It was a fabulous experience for our school.
Well done to everyone who came to school with some wild and creative hair styles for Crazy Hair Day, which was held last term.
Altogether we raised and amazing $207. Thank you to everyone who donated what an amazing number!
