Welcome to Term 4! This term is always very busy and there is much to do while planning for next year.
Our consultation period for our redevelopment gets underway on the 11th of November. We will have an official launch with the minister and following that we will have sessions with students, staff, and community. We will be advertising these soon through our usual school channels, and newspaper and radio. This is certainly an exciting period where we get to have input in what we would like to have here at South in terms of provision for our learners before the actual design process is undertaken.
Our leadership team were recently invited to participate in the Independent Review of Education in Tasmania. The commissioner and her support staff met with us after we were identified and put forward as one of Tasmania’s most outstanding schools. Her review will include recommendations from schools like ours who are leading cultural and pedagogical change and implementation in the state. She was extremely impressed with the level of teacher and support staff expertise, our culture of improvement, common pedagogical practices and focus on a wholistic education for each child.
Our grade 5/6 students have had an opportunity to do some orientation visits to Port Dalrymple and grade 6 students have their whole day orientation at Port and Star on November the 14th. Our Esk Band members also combined with Port for a whole band practise, as well as our choirs combining at the Seniors Concert. It is fantastic that our schools have a great working relationship and are able to work together for all our students in our community.
We are busily planning our class and staff structure for next year. At this point we will have a very similar structure to this year in terms of classes and teacher make up. We may have a few teachers changing roles and we will update you as this occurs. A lot of time and effort goes into ensuring our classes are the best fit for all and take into account a myriad of different considerations, however, when constructing actual classes, we always ensure that best fit for learning is the priority. If your family will not be attending South George Town Primary in 2025 please advise the school office.
Finally, I look forward to seeing you all for the Colour Run. Good luck to the winner of the competition who gets to slime me!

Smart Watch & Phone Info for Parents
Mobile phones and smart watches are a distraction from learning, and impact the development of positive personal relationships at school. The Department for Education, Children and Young People have a ‘Use of Mobile Phones by Students at School Policy: ‘Off and away all day’. These are the most important points of the policy and we ask that parents and carers support our teachers in their implementation of this policy:
- Students MUST have their mobile phones switched off and stored during school hours.
- Mobile phones must be stored in a school bag or at the school office during school hours
- Students with ‘smart watches’ or other watches capable of messaging or playing music must be set to ‘aeroplane mode’ or switched off.
- All communication from families with students during school hours MUST be through the school office

Redevelopment of South George Town Primary School
You may have heard the exciting news that the 2024-25 Tasmanian State Budget includes $15.1 million to undertake a major redevelopment of our school.
The redevelopment will provide contemporary learning and support spaces and amenities for our students and staff, with the tender for the architectural consultants to be released later this year.
In Term 4, the Department will undertake consultation with our students, staff and the broader community, seeking feedback that will be used to inform the proposed master plan and scope of works.
The consultation will commence on Monday 11 November and conclude on Friday 6 December 2024.
It’s not everyday that we get such a significant amount of funding to undertake works at our school. I strongly encourage everyone to have their say through the upcoming consultation process as your feedback will help shape the future of South George Town Primary School.
More information on the consultation process will be provided in Term 4.
