It is hard to believe that we have less than 20 school days to the end of the year! There is certainly a lot happening and it is exciting to be a part of our school community with the end of year events at school and around George Town that we will be a part of.
Our Esk Band continuing players participated in an end of year performance at St John’s Church in Launceston yesterday. We had 17 students participate, equal to any of the Launceston big schools and our students performed admirably. It was certainly an experience to play with such a large concert band and in an amazing venue. I would encourage any grade 4 students who want to learn an instrument and take up the challenge to join Esk Band next year. Unlike other schools, we make Esk Band free of charge so that all children can participate.
We have been revising much of our school data and are proud that our students continue to achieve so well. Our reading data that is collected by the department is outstanding, with just under 50% of our students achieving above or well above the reading bench mark, significantly above our like schools. This can be attributed to how hard our students are working, the fantastic teaching and support from our teachers and teacher assistants and our leadership of our literacy program from Miss Cameron and Ms Owens. Next year we will again be working hard on our teaching and learning and striving to do even better!
It is with great pleasure that I can announce our two new teachers for next year. Our grade 5/6 will have Mrs Vicki Gee, who is a very experienced teacher transferring to us from Exeter. She visited us last week and enjoyed meeting some of our students. Mrs Edwards is moving into the literacy and learning support role vacated by Mrs Daire and Miss Steph Holz will be joining us on our grade 1/2 class. Steph did a practicum placement here last year on our 1/2 and impressed us with her organisation, behaviour management and teaching skills. She has also done some relief for us over this year and has been working part time at St Leonards Primary School part time as she finished her University degree. We are very excited to have Vicki and Steph join us for 2025!
Finally, we have been focusing on being kind here at school- I would encourage everyone within our wider community to take a moment and have the focus on kindness in all that we do, whether that be within our family, or within our community. If we all take an active stance of being kind, our community will be a much safer, inclusive and positive place to live, work and play.

Esk Band End of Year Performance
Yesterday our continuing Esk Band students travelled to Launceston for a combined performance. It was great to have multiple schools work together to create wonderful music.
Last week selected students joined the Street Art Party. Students attended the official opening at the Graeme Fairless Centre and then viewed art installations within the building and along Macquarie Street. There was an opportunity for our students to create art and see their own works on display. Students and staff really enjoyed the event.
Students from Grade the 5/6 classes participated in the Remembrance Day service at the George Town Cenotaph on 11th November. They laid a wreath on behalf of our school to remember the sacrifice made by those who have served for our country.
On Thursday 7th November we held our whole school colour run. Everyone had a blast and it was good to see students, staff, and parents coming together to have fun.
There is a huge gallery of photos from the event on our school's Facebook and Instagram pages
We would like to say a massive thank you to the parents who supported us on our excursion: Brooke Crowden, Rebecca Barwick and Deborah Blunden. Your help with our students on such a LONG day was much appreciated and helped the day run smoothly.
We would also like to congratulate the 5/6 students who attended this excursion. We were very proud of how you conducted yourselves at the various venues, your lovely manners and how you represented our school to the best of your abilities. We have already received positive feedback from Richmond Gaol on how excellently behaved you were. It made for a wonderful day, for all involved.

Redevelopment of South George Town Primary School
You may have heard the exciting news that the 2024-25 Tasmanian State Budget includes $15.1 million to undertake a major redevelopment of our school.
The redevelopment will provide contemporary learning and support spaces and amenities for our students and staff, with the tender for the architectural consultants to be released later this year.
In Term 4, the Department will undertake consultation with our students, staff and the broader community, seeking feedback that will be used to inform the proposed master plan and scope of works.
The consultation will commence on Monday 11 November and conclude on Friday 6 December 2024.
It’s not everyday that we get such a significant amount of funding to undertake works at our school. I strongly encourage everyone to have their say through the upcoming consultation process as your feedback will help shape the future of South George Town Primary School.
More information on the consultation process will be provided in Term 4.
Smart Watch & Phone Info for Parents
Mobile phones and smart watches are a distraction from learning, and impact the development of positive personal relationships at school. The Department for Education, Children and Young People have a ‘Use of Mobile Phones by Students at School Policy: ‘Off and away all day’. These are the most important points of the policy and we ask that parents and carers support our teachers in their implementation of this policy:
- Students MUST have their mobile phones switched off and stored during school hours.
- Mobile phones must be stored in a school bag or at the school office during school hours
- Students with ‘smart watches’ or other watches capable of messaging or playing music must be set to ‘aeroplane mode’ or switched off.
- All communication from families with students during school hours MUST be through the school office
