Next week begins our Learn to Swim program, this program is invaluable for the development of aquatic skills and water safety understanding. Living in such a beautiful part of the state with water surrounding us it is vitally important that all of our participating students attend every session. All levels of competence are catered for from beginners to advanced and all levels in between. Please ensure that you and your child are organised with the necessary clothing and towel for every day of the program.
Our Prep to grade 2 students participated in the Bravehearts program this week. This program is designed to teach children about protective behaviours and identify trusted adults. These are very important messages for our younger students and they have received an activity book to help reinforce these messages.
Our grade 3-6 students were also visited by our Esk band tutors to demonstrate some of the instruments on offer to learn within the program. As I have often mentioned before, the Esk Band program is a very cost effective way for students to be able to access instrumental tuition and a variety of brass and woodwind instruments. You do not need to pay all of the cost up front as we can implement a payment plan for the year. The learning of musical notation, the skills of the specific instrument, the creation of practise habits and working together to achieve a goal are all great reasons to be part of the program.
We’ve certainly had our challenges without our internet connection from late last week to Tuesday afternoon. It does bring into sharp focus our reliance on modern technology, but also how adaptable our staff are. We thank you all for your understanding and patience as we were without our usual methods of communication.
Yours in partnership,
Brett Hay

Changes to George Town Bus Service
To clarify changes in payment for the Buses R Us local George Town service. If you are a low income family, or on a pension or health care card, you can apply to Service Tasmania on their website or via a link on www.busesrus.net.au for a Green Card. If you do not qualify for a Green Card, the cost will be $1.80 per trip payable to the driver. Ten ride tickets can also be purchased for the discounted rate of $14.40.
The cards can take up to 6 weeks to arrive if ordered at this time of the year.
These changes do not impact the Low Head/Bell Buoy, Lefroy/Beechford, Pipers River or Hillwood routes.
Are you eligible for the Student Assistance Scheme (STAS) 2020?
STAS is available to provide assistance to low income families towards the cost of levies for students enrolled from kindergarten through to year 12. An income assessment is applied for assistance under the Scheme.
Eligibility details for STAS 2020 are provided on the STAS application form, which is available from the school office. If you believe you may qualify, please come and see us.
If you are currently receiving Student Assistance and have a child commencing school this year, you will need to add them on to the Approval Letter you should have received recently. That letter should then be brought into the school office.
At South we have a Positive Behaviour Support focus each week. This is based on our values of learning, respect, responsibility and relationships and is taken from our behaviour expectations matrix. To begin the year, we will discuss each value in detail and what it means to us and our school community. The PBS focus is published each week in the newsletter and on facebook and can be seen on display around the school. We encourage parents to discuss the focus with their children each week.
On Monday 24th February, students from Grade 3 – 5 (and selected Grade 6 students) will commence their Swimming and Water Safety Program. This program will run for two weeks and students will bring home information over the coming days. Consent has been provided through the coloured form signed during book sales. If you have not completed this form, one will be sent home with your child. Students without a completed form will be unable to participate.
Students from 1/2 Locke and 1/2 Gilmartin-Garwood will also participate in the swimming program. Details have been sent home today with students in those classes. They will also require a signed consent form.
9.20 - 10.20am | 3/4 Edwards |
10.20 - 11.20 am | 4/5 McGinniss-Hardinge |
11.20 - 12.20 pm | 3/4 Achilles-Cameron |

Parents are welcome to attend the program. However, students are encouraged to be independent dressers and therefore parents are requested to stay out of the change rooms. A current Working with Vulnerable People Check is required for all parents accompanying children on the walk to the pool. A copy of your current card should be given to the office staff.
South George Town Primary School has a Sun Smart Policy that has been endorsed by the School Association. The purpose of this policy is to protect the wellbeing of our students through good Sun Smart practices and to develop safe behaviours in our children.
The policy includes the wearing of wide-brimmed hats during Terms 1 and 4. Caps, beanies and other items are not suitable. Students who do not have hats will need to stay in the shade during recess and lunch breaks.

Welcome to a new school year! My name is Bec and I am your School Health Nurse. I will be working each Thursday on SGTP school grounds in 2020. The role of the Primary School Nurse is to provide health education and health promotion to students and the school community. Along with health assessments for kindergarten students, I will be engaging all grades in lessons and activities surrounding health and wellbeing. Some of these lessons will include education on nutrition, personal hygiene, oral care, sun safety, growth and development and mindfulness.
Vision and hearing screens for all primary students are also available on request if there is a specific concern. Consent forms must be signed by a parent/guardian prior to all assessments, including kindergarten health assessments.
Please feel free to contact me through the school office on a Thursday if you have any concerns or questions about your child’s health or the role of the School Nurse. You can also email if preferred bec.beeston@education.tas.gov.au
I hope that your child/ren have had a positive start to the year!
Kind Regards,
Nurse Bec
