Book week is always an exciting time in any school and is very much part of the South George Town Primary School culture. Not only is it an opportunity to dress up, but more importantly it is time to celebrate our love of reading and books and the significant impact they make in our lives. Keep an eye out for photos on our Facebook page of all the great costumes and innovative designs and the grade 1/2 visits to the library.
You may have read lately, or heard on the news about some recent research that has come to hand about the explicit teaching of reading. There are some people who are of the opinion that this doesn’t actually happen in schools- I can assure you that the explicit teaching of reading and writing (amongst all the other learning areas) does not only occur at South but is inbuilt into the way we teach each and every day. We pride ourselves on being abreast of, and implementing scientifically proven and evidence based practices. Our staff are all continuously striving to improve their craft, and I often give you snapshots of our focus (such as the teaching of vocabulary) in the newsletter.
We are always striving to improve our school in all aspects and part of this process is collecting information from our staff, students and parents via surveys. In the coming weeks we will be sending home a survey link for parents to give feedback on our school, and at school students will be undertaking the student health and wellbeing survey and staff the staff survey. By gathering such information it helps us make decisions and guide future actions.
Although it has been challenging weather wise we have soldiered on through our winter sport exchanges, with one more round to come and also the Country Gold carnivals. We also have some exciting excursions and grade 6 orientation process starting over the next few weeks. Lets hope that the weather starts to improve over the next few weeks and we can start to enjoy the Tasmanian spring!

The 5/6 classes would like to thank Tom Donnelly for sharing his journey towards a teaching career and being drafted by North Melbourne, VFL. Tom grew up in Hillwood, where he still lives. He attended SGTPS and Port Dalrymple so is a great ambassador for what can be achieved with an education in our community. Whilst Tom was naturally a great athlete at a young age, he talked about setbacks, failures and challenges and the need for resilience. He certainly promoted failure and error as a way to learn and move forward. INSPRIATIONAL is a word to describe Tom’s presentation and the ‘life messages’ he shared with our 5/6 students. He is a fantastic person and a really inspirational example of what can be achieved by anyone.
Yesterday staff and students celebrated Book Week by dressing up as book characters. We were so impressed and amazed by the creativity and time that has been put into the costumes.
We recieved 51 entries for the Book Week colouring in competition! They all looked amazing and everyone should be proud of their efforts. All students who entered the competition will receive a book mark of their choice.
