What a wonderful day we had at our athletics carnival on Monday. It was really nice to see the learning that our students have been undertaking in PE celebrated with such an event. As always, the ECE carnival was lots of fun with many students having their first go at running in a race. There were lots of smiles on faces and our Student Leaders all did a fantastic job. The Primary carnival was also a lot of fun, as well as very tiring! It was amazing to see the level of participation from all of our students and the effort that they all put into competing. The greatest thrill for me was to see the level of support that everyone had for their fellow competitors and the great spirit in which everyone competed. Our thanks go to Ms Fish for her outstanding organisation, as well as our volunteers and the great Port Dalrymple School Sports Leaders. Unfortunately due to Education Department COVID restrictions we are postponing the Tamar Association carnival to a later date. We will update everyone when we have more clarity around this.
As I write this newsletter, the Lego creations are starting to fill our gym. Already we have some great entries and with more to come over the coming day we will once again have a very strong Lego competition. We will share all of the entries via our Facebook and Instagram pages over the next week. Our winners will be announced and published in our next newsletter.
To finish I have some exciting news! Students will be able to purchase school lunches for next term. We are currently working on a trial with a local business to supply our school lunches on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. We will update you with more details as they come to hand.

Vaccination is the best protection
Our school has many COVID-19 safety measures in place, but vaccination is the best way to protect your child from COVID-19.
As per Public Health advice, vaccination is safe and helps to reduce the spread of COVID-19. Your child will need two doses (eight weeks apart) to be fully vaccinated.
If you haven’t already, please book your child aged 5+ years in for their initial vaccination or second dose vaccination. It’s easy to book your appointment online. Alternatively, call the Public Health Hotline on 1800 671 738.
Please know that all children, regardless of whether they’ve been vaccinated or not, are welcome to attend school.
For more information, please visit the Tasmanian Government Coronavirus website or contact the Tasmanian Public Health Hotline on 1800 671 738, or Department of Education COVID-19 Support Hotline at COVID19support@education.tas.gov.au or on 1800 816 057.
If you need support translating or interpreting this information, please contact the Translating and Interpreting Service on 131 450.
This year, you will notice some changes to reporting in Tasmanian Government Schools.
Firstly, you won’t see A-E reporting any more for Prep to Year 10 students.
Most families in Tasmanian Government Schools have told us that A-E reporting isn’t meaningful enough for them. So, the Department is introducing a new 9-point visual scale.
Along with the visual scale a worded description will be included to help you understand how your child is going against the expected standard for their year level. The 9-point scale will show more specifically where your child is at with their learning. This change won’t apply to students in Years 11 and 12.
The second main change you’ll see is that teachers will not be providing written comments on reports. We will continue to communicate with you regularly throughout the year as we always have.
This regular communication might be through online communication, telephone calls, or face-to-face conversations.
By having more regular information about your child’s learning progress you’ll get a better understanding of how your child is going across the entire school year (not just twice a year).
What you should expect across the school year:
Term 1 |
Week 7 |
Communication focussing on application to learning via the Primary Progress report |
Term 2 |
Week 10 |
Mid-year report of learning achievement and Parent Teacher interviews |
Term 3 |
Weeks 6-9 |
Opportunity for a two or three-way conversation focussing on learning progress, application to learning and wellbeing and/or learning plan goals. These will be conducted via phone calls. |
Term 4 |
Week 9-10 |
End of year report of learning achievement |
Families will be supported to understand the new reporting requirements and the changes to mid and end of year report as they are implemented.
Watch the video introducing the changes: Changes to reporting in 2022

Today the grade 5/6 girls participated in a “Girl’s Day”. This was in response to the well-being survey they did in 2021 where many expressed that they felt worried or anxious. The focus is on improving their mental health, developing positive coping strategies and having fun together.
The day started with four amazing young women: Rhiannah, Kylie, Erika and Gabby. These wonderful role models shared their life journeys to date. They focussed on the fact that they have had to overcome adversity and times of sadness. Each lady shared how they coped and moved on. Sharing their strategies and ideas to stay positive was a great lesson for our girls to hear. Messages included: talking to others about problems, be happy about being yourself, set goals, surround yourself with true friends. As well as lovely strategies such as staying fit and healthy, journaling, joining a club, listening to music. As Kara said when she thanked our guests- “Thank you. You were Inspirational!”
In the middle block the girls have created and decorated their own gratitude journals. We have asked the girls to commit to keeping a gratitude journal (yes- there is scientific evidence to show the many benefits of doing so) and we will welcome their feedback during our next special day.
In the afternoon the girls had a choice of continuing with their journals, board games with lots of chatting and/or working on a Grade 5/6 girls play list called South Girls Shout.
Some quotes from the girls:
Lily-Rose: The day has been inspiring because it made me want to set my own goals.
Paige: It was great because we got to open up and talk about stuff that we needed to.
Sophie: It was great to let stuff out
Lillian: ENJOYABLE! I got to share feelings I don’t usually share and it was helpful
Mia: It made me feel a bit more confident
Pixie: Amazing. I got to listen to different people. They had such interesting stories
Khloe: I think today was amazing. I really enjoyed the art and I got to meet and know new people
Brianna: Best day of my life!

My role at SGTPS
I teach Prep and I love it!
These are a few of my favourite things
- Going for walks on the beach with my dogs.
- Visiting fun places, like tropical islands, with friends.
- I love reading and I love eating yummy food like veggie lasagne!
- I love living in Bridport!
Dislikes
- I don’t like it when people are mean to other people or to animals.
- I don’t like driving at night.
Pets
I have four pets: Rosie and Bea are sisters, they are Exotic Shorthair cats, and they are 7 years old.
Ruby and Bentley are my dogs, they are both Pug x King Charles Cavalier Spaniel but look very different. They are both 5 years old.
A few fun facts
I was born in Tassie, but moved to the Sunshine Coast in Queensland when I was 10 years old.
I moved to Cairns in 2006 and lived there for 14 years. I was fortunate enough to teach in a beautiful indigenous community called Yarrabah for 7 years. The school was located right on the beach
We are now taking names for our Pre-Kinder program for 2022. If your child was born in 2018 and you live in the South George Town Primary School zone, they are eligible to attend. Please register your interest by contacting the school office on 63821564 or sending a text to 0418 479 961.
