A warm welcome back to everyone for term 3. Our students have settled back into their routines and learning wonderfully. We once again see our students living our school values. It is fantastic to see so many children attending school and engaging in all the amazing things that South has to offer.
Unfortunately we have seen a surge in COVID-19 numbers across the school, particularly in our younger grades. I would implore you to keep your children home if they are unwell, as we are finding it increasingly difficult to replace staff when they fall ill themselves. There are a number of non-COVID illnesses also circulating that do make students unwell and it is best that they stay home.
Our teachers are working very hard in building our understanding and improving our teaching in regard to writing. From Kinder to year 6 we are all collectively undertaking professional learning and working collaboratively to improve our teaching and our students' learning. We are also excited to be introducing an initiative to build our students' love of writing through a draw, talk, write “package” that we will be giving to our K-2 students very shortly- watch this space for more details!
We also have some exciting opportunities for our students coming up with Country Gold trials and carnival later in the term, Esk Band continuing player workshop, a Terrapin puppet performance and a Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra performance. Alongside this we continue to engage our students with an exciting and varied curriculum delivered by an outstanding and dedicated team of teachers and support staff.

This term students in the Esk Band Program are part of a practice challenge where they are aiming to become the first student in their school to complete 35 days of instrumental practice. “Practice” is completing at least 10mins of playing, focused on improving/mastering a piece from their Tradition of Excellence tutor book or a section of music from a band piece. The 35 days do not need to be consecutive, but that will help students to be the first to finish! Over the 35 days there should be a visible progression through the tutor book. Parents or carers must initial that the practice has been completed.
The first continuing and first beginning student at each school will be awarded a $35 voucher for Barratts Music!
We had some very special visitors at South last week. Some former South students known as “Club Penguin” visited from Port along with Nick Duigan MLC and Adrian Dean, Principal of Port Dalrymple School. The Club Penguin students were presented with the winning prize in the 2021 Internet of Everything competition. Last year these students designed and built a micro computer that counted penguins as they used a nesting box. The winning prize was $1200 for South and $400 for the students involved to share. Congratulations to our current grade 6 student Oliver (not pictured) and our former students. We are very proud of you!
