Welcome back to everyone for the start of another exciting school year. A special welcome to all of our new staff, students and families to our South family, it’s our pleasure to have you here.
Our students have certainly started well, settling into routines, making new and reacquainting themselves with old friends. It is always difficult to start with the Learn to Swim program first up as this can be unsettling, however our students have adapted well, and according to our swimming instructors doing an incredible job. Our amazing teachers, TA’s, office staff and support staff have all contributed to making the start of this year so settled and positive.
Our through-line of continual improvement will still be our driving motivation. Our focus area will again be improving our students reading comprehension outcomes and our effort will be concentrated on improving our teaching and learning of Fluency and Background Knowledge. Throughout the year we will have more information about how we can work together to enable our collective goals.
This year NAPLAN will be undertaken in March and we will have more information to come shortly. It will be interesting to see the effect of having this testing so early in the year has on our results as we have made significant improvement over the past few years.
First term this year is a week shorter so we have a lot to fit in to an already busy term. We start off with our athletics carnival in week 5 on Monday March the 6th and it would be great to see as many families attend as possible.

It was great to see all our students again, all refreshed and ready to take on 2023! Students have settled into the new year so well.

Last Friday we had an Esk Band demonstration. Esk Band is an important program that runs within our school for grades 4-6. Learning an instrument builds many skills, not just musical, and we have witnessed amazing personal growth from band participants. Program flyers will be going home and we encourage any student who wants to learn an instrument (from the concert band selection) to enrol in the program. This year our music teacher Ms Long will be supervising and tutoring the program. Last year Mr. Hay announced that there will be no cost involved for students that wish to join. We do ask that students who sign up for Esk Band are sure that they will be 100% commited to doing the program for the whole year.
Small sturdy boxes wanted by 5/6 White-Daire
To assist with a special program for one of our students we require some small, strong boxes which will be used for construction. (10cm by 10cm by 12 cm for example, or smaller). We would also appreciate donations of mini toys, that families no longer need. Thank you

Are you eligible for the Student Assistance Scheme (STAS) 2023?
STAS is available to provide assistance to low income families towards the cost of levies for students enrolled from kindergarten through to year 12. An income assessment is applied for assistance under the Scheme.
Eligibility details for STAS 2023 are provided on the STAS application form, which is available from the school office. If you believe you may qualify, please come and see us.
If you are currently receiving Student Assistance and have a child commencing school this year, you will need to add them on to the Approval Letter you should have received recently.
