Another Step forward in STEaM at South George Town Primary School

With the prize money awarded to South George Town Primary School by past and present students winning the 2021 Greater Launceston Area Internet Of Things competition, the school has added to its STEaM resources with the purchase of a 3-in-1 3D printer. Already up and running after only being in the school for a few days, the new printer will not only compliment our existing 3D printing and design program, but also offer students an insight into the CNC machining and Laser Etching worlds.

This 3-in-1 machine allows us to work with many different types of plastic filament and offers high precision printing to produce fine and smooth models. The printer also has the ability to engrave with high precision on surfaces such as wood, PCB, paper and plastics using a CNC cutter. The laser head can etch many different kinds of materials including wood, paper, plastic, leather etc.

There are plans to use this new technology in a more artistic fashion, allowing the production of an infinite variety of student created etching designs which can then be ‘printed’ onto fabric or other surfaces. This new printer will certainly provide wonderful opportunities for students creative abilities to reach new heights.

A very big thank you to grade 5/6 teacher Darrin Timms for his work in this important area.
