This term has certainly flown by! Given the Easter adjustment to the end of term we are finishing one week early. This has had an impact on the length of this term. We have certainly fitted a lot into a short amount of time, and I am very proud of the way the students have embraced their learning. We have had a focus on developing our students vocabulary through our Science units and this focus on building vocabulary will continue throughout the rest of the year.
Our students participated in the TPSSA athletics carnival last Friday and demonstrated great sportsmanship. We did have some stand out performers, but the greatest achievement was the effort that each individual brought to their event. Seeing each and every student give their best time and again truly demonstrates our focus disposition of resilience.
Our teachers have been working hard at school preparing for the moderation day. This year all of our teachers will be meeting with staff from Port Dalrymple, Lilydale, East Tamar, Invermay, Brooks and Mowbray schools at East Tamar primary school to look at reading and writing samples of work. This is a great opportunity to see how our students work compares to others, whilst also getting ideas from other teachers on how to improve student learning at our school. Education research tells us that the most effective way to improve student learning is by teachers collaborating.
The first Sunday after we resume for Term 2 will be ANZAC day. We will be participating in the RSL march and service again this year. Because of COVID restrictions we will be requiring all students who will be participating to register with the school the week before. Students are unable to turn up on the day to march without registering with the school beforehand. Any students marching with their family will register with their family on the day using the Tas check in app.
Finally, I hope you all have a restful and safe break. May you catch some fish and your footy team win!
Yours in partnership,
Brett Hay
A big thank you to all who brought in a gold coin donation on Tuesday to help raise funds for the Cancer Council Tasmania. Altogether we raised an oustanding $360!
The LEGO Competition is done and dusted for another year. Again, it was a major success with 50 students entering. This means about one out of every four students at our school got actively involved in thinking, designing, making, talking and writing about their Lego creation. Year 4 was our most popular age group this year, with 11 students entering.
A big thank you to all parents, friends and family members who helped out or encouraged our students to get involved in this highly creative competition. The names of our winners from each age group are shown below.
A special congratulations go to Alyssa who was our overall school winner this year. Judges were very impressed with Alyssa’s chicken and hatching chook. Alyssa’s creation was definitely original and eye catching with a fair bit of technical skill also required.
We look forward to running the Lego competition again next year. If your child has not received their certificate yet then please see Mr Baty to collect it. Well done to all students who entered and thank you to all spectators (adults and kids) who came to look and support the competition. It certainly has brought an extra element of excitement and enthusiasm to our primary corridor over the last couple of weeks.

Students are now asked to take their Lego designs home with them. We would also strongly encourage you, once home, to thoroughly clean and disinfect your child’s Lego.
The South George Town Primary School Association AGM was held on Monday 29th March, 2021. Nominations were received for office bearers, and the 2021/22 School Association committee is as follows:
Principal | Brett Hay |
Chairperson | Dayle Clark |
Secretary | Sharon Bumford |
Treasurer | Sharon Bumford |
Community Representative | Jayne Watts |
Parent Representative | Caroline Brown |
Parent Representative | Amelia Clark |
Parent Representative | Mel Street |
Staff Representative | Janine Spicer |
I would like to thank outgoing Chairperson Kara Long for her contributions over the years of her involvement in the School Association.
It was decided to create a sub-committee which would be known as the Parents and Friends committee. The purpose of this group will be to come up with some wonderful fundraising ideas/suggestions and to help out when possible on sport days in the canteen, or at different exciting school events. This is the perfect way to get involved in your child's school and show us just how many creative, amazing parents we have!
If you think this sounds like you, but you can only attend an occasional get together, please drop by the office and see me.

Hello everyone,
The art room is looking for donations of a few items. If you have any large pieces of polystyrene we would love to have them. Later in the year the students will be making some sculptures from recycled materials. If you have any interesting metal pieces that you don’t need it would be great if you could donate them. Old unused wallpaper and really old books would also be very welcome.
Thanks from the art room.
