As a school we continue to build upon our culture of learning. Recently I met with our School Improvement Leader who wanted to celebrate the significant overall improvement in our A-E rating data within our school. Much of this improvement can be attributed to the work of our teachers, TA’s and the students themselves. However, we know that parental support and all members of our school community are essential in building a love of learning and a culture of continual improvement.
Our LIFT initiative of the Drawing, Talking and Writing at Home packs has been a great success and we are seeing an immediate effect in our students' engagement and skills in writing. We have also had an uptake in older students requesting a pack so they can participate too, as well as selling out of the diaries and note books at the Book Fair. All this points to a whole school commitment to improving our writing, and we are already reaping the benefits in regard to our students' skills and knowledge reflected in improved A-E ratings. Our focus on writing will be ongoing and many years work, that will drive our students' reading comprehension, vocabulary development and topic understanding in all subject areas.
Our year 4-6 students will be undertaking their health and wellbeing survey over the coming weeks. This is important data that we use to inform our areas of support for our students. We used the data from last year to bolster our support for students with worry and resilience issues and implemented our gender specific support programs for our upper primary students. It also helps us track our students engagement with their learning, teachers and peers. We continue to strive to enact our school vision of empowering our students to participate and succeed as creative, ethical and purposeful members of our community and society.

Drawing, Talking and Writing at home
Here are some more photos of our students doing the drawing, talking, and writing at home. This initiative has produced a lot of amazing work that we're so proud of!
On Tuesday, our continuing Esk Band musicians travelled to Newstead College to rehearse a repertoire with East Launceston, Punchbowl and Glen Dhu Primary Schools. We spent 2 hours playing and refining 4 pieces of music. Coming together for such rehearsals helps us to work together with others, make new friends and connect with the greater community.
Our combined-school band will perform this music in Launceston City Park towards the end of the year, along with 2 other combined-school bands. It is always an amazing experience playing in a band of 50 players; we get to hear so much more than we do in our smaller school band, and working together towards the same goal brings great fun and a strong sense of belonging.

This term students in the Esk Band Program are part of a practice challenge where they are aiming to become the first student in their school to complete 35 days of instrumental practice. “Practice” is completing at least 10mins of playing, focused on improving/mastering a piece from their Tradition of Excellence tutor book or a section of music from a band piece. The 35 days do not need to be consecutive, but that will help students to be the first to finish! Over the 35 days there should be a visible progression through the tutor book. Parents or carers must initial that the practice has been completed.
The first continuing and first beginning student at each school will be awarded a $35 voucher for Barratts Music!
Student Wellbeing and Engagement Survey
Students in our school are taking part in the annual Student Wellbeing and Engagement Survey. The Survey will take place in between 26th August and 23rd September 2022.
The wellbeing of all students at South George Town Primary School is important to us. When young people feel safe, connected, and secure, they are more likely to engage in their learning.
This survey forms part of the Department’s Wellbeing for Learning - Child and Student Wellbeing Strategy. It helps us get a picture of the current wellbeing of our students, and what we can do to improve future wellbeing. The more students who take part, the clearer our picture will be.
